Ammonium nitrate in AUS

B(a)P - 17-1-2020 at 01:55

Quick question for members in Australia. Do you make your ammonium nitrate or do you buy it? If you buy it, where from? I make mine from Bunnings fertilizer, calcium nitrate and ammonium sulfate. It is relatively cheap, but labour intensive with the filtration.

I have not come across any otc sources of ammonium nitrate. Indeed, I have not come across any good otc sources of nitrates in general. I have not seen Ca(NO3) in Bunnings.

That said, I have not had a need for NH4NO3. If I did, I would lihely do the same as you, or simply react ammonia with nitric acid. (Wasteful, but if there was a real need...)

I do have a good supply of KNO3 so that's something.

I got various metal nitrates from Science Essentials, some quite cheap for 500g or 1kg quantities, but I never asked about Ammonium Nitrate. Give Peter a call at Science Essentials and ask him - I have yesterday listed his mobile number in another post about Aussie supplier in the Reagents and Apparatus forum.

I am good for poassium nitrate but I have only one source in Sydney, hopefully it isn't going anywhere. Bunnings sell a hydroponics fertilizer which is fairly pure calcium nitrate. They also sell a few two part fertilisers which have one component as calcium nitrate.

Calcium nitrate pellets are part b of the powdered 2 part hydroponic nutrients available in Bunnings.

Vanbar imaging sells nickel nitrate and lead nitrate (plus many other good things at reasonable prices)

Sorry for the many replies as I remember:

Banksia Scientific sells bismuth nitrate and chromium nitrate

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bismuth-Nitrate-AR-500g/16385678...

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Chromium-III-nitrate-nonahydrate...

Banksia sells more than what they list on eBay, they also have at least 2 websites, but sometimes their eBay prices are lower!
