So I picked up a vintage Mel Temp unit on Ebay for 5 bucks! The only problem is there is a thermometer that may or may not contain mercury broken off
inside it.
What would be the best way to extract this broken thermometer?

Turn it upside down and smack the bottom over a bucket of sulfur?

I smacked it a few times until the thermometer broke out depositing its cache of quicksilver into a plastic bag soon to join my collection of mercury
in a vial. I then filled the thermometer well with garden sulfur. Hopefully it doesn't disintegrate, I think its aluminum based on how easily it was
scarred by the impacts.
