Iodine readily forms weak addition / cordination complexes with solvents and other ions, etc.
It is weakly soluble in water but in the presence of iodide it dissolves readily to form a triiodide anion.

Similary a solution of iodine in alcohol or diethyl ether is brown but a solution in chloroform is purple.
