Electrolysis device

Hi
i was wondering if anybody here would recommend an electrolysis device to generate hydrogen,

if no good such device is worth the expense building one might be an idea,
how long nickel will resist as electrode for electrolysis in sodium carbonate solution ?

i was considering this as a cheap source of hydrogen to do catalytic hydrogenisation of oil.

I use two graphite electrodes in a 3 necked flask of NaOH with a tube leading through anh. Calcium chloride and into a balloon.
The voltage is controlled by a model train speed controller.

You can build a similar permanent setup with PVC pipes.
