At one time lab supply places would carry a mixture of bleaching powder (sort of calcium hypochlorite) and Plaster of Paris formed into rough cubes,
intended for use in Kipp's apparatus for chlorine production. Solved the problem of retaining the powder that bleaching lime normally appears as, the
plaster content kept most of the reacted stuff up top and that which fell had already given up ts CL2.
Another if rarer item was a similar composition of calcium sulfite and plaster, for SO2 production.
