Introduction
This is a simple experiment for beginners I use in school. It is very easy to be performed, harmless and produces nice results.
chemicals
- chalk
- marker pens
- Petri dishes
- water
experimental
chalk is painted on using marker pens. Draw around the chalk one cm from its end. You can use multiple colors on one piece of chalk.
An appropriate number of Petri dishes are filled with water.
The prepared pieces of chalk are put into the Petri dishes in an upright manner.
The water will move upwards the chalk and separate the colors.
remarks
The chalk used was made of gypsum. Chalk made of CaCO3 works too. The chalk can be used normally after drying for some days.

I really like this. I'm always looking for new, safe, interactive chemistry demonstrations--especially ones that can illustrate important points.

Its also interesting to note the seperation of simular substances like the placement of the red bands in the red and the middle one(im assuming dark
green?) and the movement of the yellow bands in the blue and the green on on the end.
