Electroreductive amination Q

Hello, I was wondering with regards to the following article:

http://www.erowid.org/archive/rhodium/chemistry/electroreduc...

In their reductive amination they use some larger ketones with alpha-hydrogens available, however the catholyte recipe also calls for a PH between 10 and 12.. My understanding is that at this PH most of the ketone would undergo condensation to the corresponding aldol.. Is this not the case for some reason? As they reported substantial yields with the method..

Thanks
