I once had a heavy, used variac delivered---it had a large dent on its side, and I found later that one of the brushes was broken and this damaged the
track. . .
It was probably dropped in transit but better packing might have made some difference!

It's more than ten years ago chemrox; a Claude Lyons machine, but it travelled only about 180Km. . .
I still have it and might try rewinding the core someday!
