I've noticed this many times with the metallic nodules obtained from thermites and thermite-type reactions - admittedly not iron oxide/aluminium - but
when using aluminium as reducer (as opposed to magnesium) and with whatever oxidiser, small balls of aluminium metal form, which then disintegrate
over the next weeks and months. I've attached a picture of some of the representative balls and dust.
Does anyone know what is going on and why?

I would guess the same thing happens with magnesium, but the magnesium is on fire. Is the aluminum porous? (I can’t tell with the picture) If it is
I would think it this slowly oxidizing.
