Mailinmypocket - 8-3-2014 at 05:07

Not really a reagent, but a chemical... Soon I will be receiving a used (5mth old) bubble dosimeter, hopefully it still works reasonably

*FWOOSH* - 25-3-2014 at 10:30

25kg sack of NaBH4.
I wanted to put this up last time but I forgot before it was mostly gone.
I think this big one is more impressive than 25 1kg bags anyway:cool:

Is it legal for someone in the US to buy something like this on ebay?

NeonPulse - 27-3-2014 at 04:31

500g copper sulphate pentahydrate
50g calcium metal
30g sodium azide
2 more books of PH indicator paper -
also some assorted beakers and a new 500ml grad cylinder as i was a little clumsy and broke two at the same time.
they were in line for cleaning and a little domino effect got them while carelessly placing a heavy 10l bottle of detergent near the sink for decanting:(

gdflp - 7-4-2014 at 06:10

@Steam

Not sure about the legality, but buying 100g of red P from eBay is a good way to get the DEA to come busting down your door in the US:o

Id love to put in an order for the red phosphoros but it would be big trouble in Australia.Plenty gets thru but.

BobD1001 - 8-4-2014 at 12:24

While not chemical order, I thought I would share this lucky find! A perfectly working Thermolyne 13025 four position hot plate / magnetic stirrer for only $40! Thank you Craigslist! All plates heat and stir properly. The stirrer motors are quite noisy, and likely need some lubrication or some other form of tlc, and two knobs are missing, but I'm quite happy with this purchase!

plante1999 - 13-4-2014 at 07:12

500 ml acetic anhydride, ACS
500 ml ethylene glycol (they sent me a liter)
500 g urea (just to have a proper label for the OTC product, and was cheap)

Sweet!
I don't even have one stirrer or hot plate, let alone both together, x4!!! :) Could I borrow one...??? :) JK, enjoy!

Why would you make a comment that adds nothing to the discussion/thread?

Maybe if somebody is looking for a reagent and you mention you received some you could share your source or some of the reagent?

Anyways. To stay relevant with the topic, I was given an almost full, 30yr old 500 bottle of benzene not long ago :)

Zyklon-A - 14-4-2014 at 17:46

500mL?
You just got 1 000 posts!

[Edited on 15-4-2014 by Zyklonb]

Mailinmypocket - 14-4-2014 at 17:58

A 500 ml bottle... Not quite full... It was going to be disposed of so of course the hoarder in me took over.

1000! Didn't even notice! Party time! Let's get out the 30ml ethanol serving glasses and celebrate!

Zyklon-A - 14-4-2014 at 18:06

The 1,000 post thread?

plante1999 - 14-4-2014 at 18:20

Well, I'm going to buy a 500 ml of benzene from korea for about 60 CAD shipped in the next few days. It is just so damn useful...

Romain - 17-4-2014 at 04:41

Isn't benzene carcinogenic/toxic? It must be a pain to work with it if you don't have a fume-hood or work outside.

Lambda-Eyde - 17-4-2014 at 05:16

Quote: Originally posted by Romain

But it smells so good...

woelen - 17-4-2014 at 05:24

Benzene is carcinogenic, but its toxicity is exaggerated strongly. It is not instant death in a bottle. Acute toxicity is low, comparable with the acute toxicity of toluene.

I consider working with benzene as smoking cigarettes. If you occasionally do an experiment with this and you breathe a small whiff of this a few times and then you don't work with it for years, then I see no issue with it, just as smoking cigarettes a few times does not lead to cancer.

If you work with benzene every day and you breathe a few small whiffs of its vapor every day, then in the long run it may have adverse effects and may induce cancer in your body.

How do you copy with such risks? That is a personal choice. Every action you take in life introduces some risks. Each chemical experiment with toxic chemicals may introduce some risk on illness, but also eating fast food, drinking (too) much alcohol and many other things introduce risks for adverse long term health effects, each time. Of course, you must weigh the risks. Working with benzene a few times in my opinion introduces acceptable risks, working with e.g. arsine introduces unacceptable risks.

In general there is too much chemophobia in our society and even here on sciencemadness I frequently see it when people get afraid of certain chemicals are freak out when they have had a one-time exposure to a small amount of the chemical. Smoking, drinking, painting your house, filling the tank of your car, working with certain artists pigments, and many other things are considered OK, while these things (e.g. vapors) are as harmful as many of the chemicals we are working with in our experiments. Good common sense is your best friend in all these things. Avoid exposure as much as possible (e.g. do not do your experiments with benzene in a small badly ventilated room), but do not exaggerate (e.g. no need to wear a full gas mask when working with benzene for a few times), and certainly be not afraid of the chemicals (if you are, you'd better take another hobby).

5 3gram jars of potassium permanganate from a pharmacy. I love pharmacies in Poland, you can get potassium permanganate, in the Netherlands they told me I needed a prescription to buy permanganate. :(

woelen - 20-4-2014 at 12:04

Pharmacies are not suitable at all to buy chemicals in the Netherlands. Already quite some years ago, they switched from making drugs and medicines to just selling prepackaged items and registring patient's medication and possible incompatibilities. They have no chemicals anymore, nor simple glassware and bottles and that kind of things. A year ago I tried to buy a plastic bottle for storing a chemical, but I could not buy that, because they do not sell that anymore.

For chemicals you have to go online in the Netherlands. Only the most mundane chemicals can be purchased locally (e.g. Na2CO3, NaHCO3, 10% HCl, NaOH). Even common solvents like acetone, ligroin and white spirit are disappearing now and are replaced by 'green' eco-stuff.

Pyro - 12-5-2014 at 09:13

The polish guy I placed and paid for an order over a year ago got back to me saying that he forgot my order and just found evidence of that in his email. He then sent the order consisting of:

WP_20140512_005.jpg - 99kB

from left to right, bottom to top:
-10, 250ml containers
-1kg Mg shavings for grignards
-1000ml DMSO
-1kg Phenol
-1kg red phosphorus
-1kg NaNO2
-1Kg p.a. NaOH
-100g CoCl2x6H2O
-1kg KMnO4
-1kg anh. K2CO3
-100g KSCN
-50g methyl orange
-A set of hazard stickers, the nice old fashioned kind, not those horrible new ones.

This order was placed before I had acquired RP, so now i have a lot more than I ever need (something like 1,7kgs). I guess making PCl3 and such is in order, as well as lots of WP.

Zyklon-A - 12-5-2014 at 10:48

And again. This time ordering from Flinn Scientific for some summer science activities at a program I work for.

100 mL Adipoyl Chloride/Hexane Solution
100 mL Sebacoyl Chloride/Hexane Solution
200 mL Hexamethylenediamine/Sodium Hydroxide Solution
100 g Polyvinyl Alcohol
25 g Fluorescein (the disodium salt)

They shall learn about polymers. :) The fun part is that the leftover chemicals are mine when I'm done. :D

aga - 24-5-2014 at 11:53

The course is too intensive for one person to handle.
You need Assistants, who also get a share of the leftovers.
Lots of Assistants would be a good number.

Application forms to pichoro via pm.
Mine's already in.

Got lucky there :) In all honesty, I try not to cheat yard sale people out of their money. If they have something at 10% it's valued price, I'll normally pay them double or triple to be nice.

Tellurium 2 lbs ingot, supposedly 97%, slated to be here next Wednesday. I'm pretty stoked as I have been watching and waiting for a while to get a decent priced Te sample that wasn't going to be just a little crumb size.

and a 250g cadmium metal stick stated @ 99.99%+

[Edited on 3-6-2014 by violet sin]

plante1999 - 9-6-2014 at 13:25

The palladium chloride I ordered just arrived, it does not look at all like palladium chloride, it is brown like anhydrous copper chloride, and not red at all, it does not dissolve in water by the test I have done, heating up to 200 C as no effect at all and it makes a green spectrum in the flame test...

I will have to test more, but I think I was scammed...

Mailinmypocket - 9-6-2014 at 15:04

I really hope you did not get scammed, it is so insulting. I got scammed with vanillin a while back but if it were PGM salts I would be far angrier!

I bought 1g chrysene today without having a particular use for it yet. It seemed interesting and the price was right :)

Wow, that's quite a bit! How much did you get that for, and does the seller have any more?

plante1999 - 9-6-2014 at 15:15

I will get angry, 5g of palladium chloride!:mad::mad:

It is not reduced by Alkaline formaldehyde sol., which means I got scammed.. I will try to get my money back. It dissolve in HCl to make a light yellow sol, which is not reducible...

gdflp - 9-6-2014 at 18:08

numos - 9-6-2014 at 18:13

What do you think of this?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261489385233?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:I...

100% (not really) ethanol $15 with shipping, I'm not sure if denatured or not, but it says CONTAINS Ethyl Alcohol

No denaturing agents listed... I ordered one, figured it couldn't hurt.

500ml of [100%] ethanol doesn't seem all that bad. And if it is miraculously undenatured, all the better!

gdflp - 9-6-2014 at 18:25

If it's denatured, it's really expensive. But, generally 200 proof means that it's anhydrous ethanol, if it is, great find!

Yep, here is the MSDS http://www.deconlabs.com/msds/ETHANOL%20200%20%20Proof%20MSD...

gdflp - 10-6-2014 at 05:49

@plante1999 I think you should be good. According to this page eBay Paypal Protection it looks like you just have to make a claim within 45 days.

plante1999 - 10-6-2014 at 07:39

The guy had not shipped it after 7 open days, so I made a claim, but then he shipped it, so I removed my claim, but you can't make a claim twice on a purchace, so he managed to scam me by making me make a claim on the shipping...

violet sin - 10-6-2014 at 09:17

there should always be buyer protection on ebay. got to your purchase summary tab in "my ebay", press the "view order details" on the right of the auction in question( even completed ones ). half way down on the right of that page should be the total $ spent, and right below it is "resolve a problem". you should have no problem if there was a shipping time issue and a discrepancy in the product description. don't think they have anything to do with each other.

Praxichys - 10-6-2014 at 12:02

Got a big stock boost since I last posted here. A lot of it is restock but here:

2lb ammonium perchlorate
1lb barium carbonate
3lb calcium hydroxide
5lb 68% calcium hypochlorite, granular for chlorine generation
1lb aspirin powder for animals

And, of course, 35-ish kilos of mercury metal. Let me know if you want some. Actually, if you want a little bit of anything here, let me know. I'm already geared up to ship mercury, so why not?

No glass this time, but I am looking for a cold finger condenser and a dewar condenser in 24/40.

I currently run a small business that consumes a lot of essential oils, so my last orders are a mix of "neat stuff that the essential oil supplier carries for cheap" and some products from a supplement distributor that I actually have planned uses for.

100g camphor
100ml cassia bark essential oil (min. 85% cinnamaldehyde)
100g calcium pyruvate
50g anhydrous caffeine
250g ascorbic acid
100g arginine alphaketoglutarate (I just need the ketoglutarate half... it is very hard to find simple Na/K/Ca/Mg salts of alpha-ketoglutaric acid)

Mailinmypocket - 24-6-2014 at 12:41

Of course. You need to have the proper container though... They won't fill a styrofoam cooler or a large thermos. I have a 5 liter dewar which seems to be okay with them. Dry ice they sell to anyone and their dog lol

Just ordered 12 half-gallon and 8 one-gallon wide-mouth glass jars to hold reagents. I usually buy a kilo or two of whatever chemical when I order it, so for many reagents my 32oz jars just don't cut it.

Also picked up a 40x200mm ID dewar condenser, an 8"x8" lab jack, and a bunch more bossheads and clamps. Got some stuff using liquid ammonia coming up soon.

I am now adding my current chemical stock list to my signature.

I have already attempted contact of staff at CSUC ( chico state university ) regarding an XRF test of the Ir powder. Though no one seems to get back to me yet... I was hoping to have it certified in some fashion before leaving feedback. Not all Ebay purchases are to be trusted, but I love the "NOT as described" safety feature.

When I was a kid I would nerd out on the Merck Index. My favorite section was the fluorine compounds: fluorine monoxide, chlorine trifluoride, fluorine nitrate... very danger, much reactive! Around this time, there was also a clinical case study of a bad hydrofluoric acid burn in Discover. They sort of captured my imagination; I even had an idea for a scifi story about a spaceship whose reactor starts leaking fluorine, and the crew has to try to seal it, in Teflon mechas.

So, I couldn't not pick this up when I saw it in the grocery store (!):

The service was great! Shipping was no issue and the cost was reasonable (they deal with all the customs fees once you pay the original shipping quote). Tom was also very helpful in addressing any questions/concerns. Definitely going to be ordering from them in the future!

I just ordered 200 mg of C60 (fullerene) from an eBay seller (it is not cheap, this sample cost me EUR 14.70). This is not intended for experiments, but as part of my element collection. I also want to make a sample of C60, dissolved in an organic solvent. Just a fraction of a mg gives a beautiful deep purple color. C60 is one of the allotropes of carbon, which does dissolve in ordinary solvents! When the material arrives, I will make pictures of it and show it here.

I started home chemistry with a little lab in the garage, most of the chemicals found around the house or provided by my parents. I remember very clearly the first time I purchased my own chemicals with my own allowance, getting an 8-ounce bottle of sulfur powder from the local general store.

Many years later, I make the bittersweet announcement that that bottle has run out, the last few grams being converted into zinc sulfide.

Time to get more.

The scaredy cat in me has finally(after roughly two years) mustered up the courage to order a sample of elemental mercury.
Yes, I am a wuss.

The next challenge will be transferring it to my bottle of choice, without my usual lab and equipment(since it is at home), so outside.

How many grams did you baught?

Jylliana - 20-12-2014 at 10:07

100 grams. It was the smallest amount they would sell at that store. It's only 7,6ml, so it's not much anyway.

plante1999 - 20-12-2014 at 10:55

You mean, you bought mercury OTC?!

Jylliana - 20-12-2014 at 12:03

Yeah, from a drugstore... it's an 'old-fashioned' drugstore... unique in the country. It was quite a search to get it.

I bought aniline and my grandfather shocked me with an old bottle of carbon tetrachloride! It was given to him by a friend many years ago to clean finger prints off the windows in his house... The friend worked in some kind of print shop. He was going to chuck it in the trash and decided to ask me if I wanted it, it's only maybe 300ml but CCl4 nonetheless :D

C60 is one of the allotropes of carbon, which does dissolve in ordinary solvents! When the material arrives, I will make pictures of it and show it here.

It is now almost 25 years since a low tech production technique using carbon arcs was developed, but fullerenes seemingly remain extremely hard to source. On-line vendors generally have the "contact us for a quote" model that indicates a non-starter for the small hobbyist.

Even on Alibaba most listings do not quote prices. I see one (Jindun Chemical) offering "C60" at $30-$100/gram with a one gram minimum. $100 for a gram of pure fullerene (I assume a mixture) is not too bad, it would make up about 400 mL of saturated solution in toluene.

Some technical stock from an online pottery store. I like buying carbonates, because it is easy to dissolve them into various acids, filter out the crap, and then crystallize. It is then easy to get the reasonably pure nitrate, chloride, sulfate, acetate, bromide, etc salts on demand, for very cheap. All quantities in pounds.

Cr2O3
Li2CO3
MgCO3
MnCO3
NiCO3
ZnO

Some other specialties from the same company, in the same order (All quantities in pounds.):
NaF
V2O5
CoSO4 (1/2 pound only)
TiO2

From another place, 3lbs of sodium metabisulfite, for a sulfur dioxide video.

And finally, some equipment: A new submersible pump for pumping ice water, a 1/4" NPT gate valve for the SO2 tank, some Nichrome 80, a new 2kVA variac for Christmas, and this which had some pretty decent stuff in it like dimethylglyoxime and lead acetate.

Oh, and a pound of tin metal ingots, a pound of bismuth, and a pound of 99.99% copper shot.

It's in my signature, but I'll put in a shameless plug... I maintain a public Google document of my current inventory here, as well as a wish list.

violet sin - 28-1-2015 at 18:50

today I got 25g Se(ebay) and a cryocool CC-100 II immersion cooler(obviously not ebay).

graphite crucible, full face shield/respirator and 2x small UV shield quartz tubes(doped to block UV for aquarium, only 99¢ea) on the way.

have to say the Se came unsatisfactorily packed. non-padded USPS envelop, with a paper folded in half and taped on the border as an envelope, with a double ziplocked bag inside. seemed like a great way to send finely powdered selenium? any sharp object could have impaled in one side and out the other. it didn't really look like the bag inside the other was wrapped neatly, just kinda shoved in...

Not a reagent but I found this at an antique store. The woman sold it for 3$ and called it a "smoking lamp" fml. I don't even know what to use it for... Distilling or steam generating, I guess. Although I have better things to do both of those. Oh well! Score nonetheless :P

I ordered a few new chemicals, some of them really special:

10g CoF3 (expensive, but allows me to make small amounts of elemental F2, by heating this chemical)
100g C2Cl6 (did not yet have this, is cheap, just over EUR 4)
100g Ni(ClO4)2.6H2O (did not yet have this, is cheap, just over EUR 7)
10g WCl6 (expensive stuff, but VERY interesting, maybe allows me to make a blue gas, if this succeeds then pictures will follow on my website)
1g Eu2O3 (nice fluorescence sample)
10g Ho2O3 (interesting for doing lanthanide experiments)
20g PBr5 (very nice colorful sample for weird compounds collection, in glass ampoule)
20g As (very nice sample for element collection, in glass ampoule)

All together less than 300 grams, but really worth the money. Especially the CoF3, WCl6, PBr5 and As are very interesting to my opinion (and these also make up over 80% of the cost of this order).

Ok. I have to ask. How do you propose to store the F2? Or are you going to use it straight away for something?
These all seem really intriguing to me.

woelen - 9-2-2015 at 14:57

I do not store F2. I just want to see it (and make pictures of it) and try some things with it, like throwing Al-powder in it (which is supposed to give bright flashes of light).

The experiments are on a test tube scale, not more, I just ordered 10 grams (CoF3 is EXPENSIVE, appr. $25 per 10 grams!), so the amounts of F2 made will be small and the safety issues only are moderate.

:o The same shop also sells pure very finely powdered SO3 (in a glass ampoule, 70 ... 80 grams), but this is so corrosive and extreme that I let it go. It also is very expensive, appr. $150 for 75 grams or so.

That's what we used as a distillation flask in the old days before the advent of RBFs and ground glassware. I have one but never use it. ;)

Mailinmypocket - 9-2-2015 at 16:43

Yes my high school used to have some kicking around also but we never used them (same as retorts, got one of those and have yet to use the darn thing!) More clutter to add to the shelves lol

mr.crow - 12-2-2015 at 18:16

I finally found xylene and MEK on the shelves of a big name Canadian home and automotive store :D

Mailinmypocket - 13-2-2015 at 06:55

MEK! I think I know of the store you speak of... But it always seems to depend on the area you are in.

mr.crow - 15-2-2015 at 19:32

Its Canadian and they sell Tires

I just need to find toluene now

Mailinmypocket - 15-2-2015 at 20:07

I need to travel around the city. The one near me only has HCl and MeOH. Darn. I hate that chain for their inconsistency!

They have MEK and xylene here too.

Mailinmypocket - 15-2-2015 at 20:28

Weird. Xylene is at one small local store. MEK I need to buy at a special local store or a lab supplier. I find it so strange that one Canadian Tire sells it vs others. I wonder what determining factors decide if or if not it will be in store.

Yea, I was wondering the same thing. I have seen all those reagents on the shelves at Canadian Tire at one point or another, but it's always changing, with no apparent pattern. I haven't seen MEK in a while though... Does anyone know why they seem to be slowly phasing it out?
