I'd say it's a good idea.

Mabus - 5-2-2015 at 09:59

Just blocked a vandal who blanked the Potassium chloride page.

Brain&Force - 5-2-2015 at 10:22

I haven't edited the wiki since December...I need to start doing that.

Unfortunately Wikia hates Internet Explorer for some reason.

The Volatile Chemist - 6-2-2015 at 09:21

Yech, vandalism. Lets get back to work on the wiki, everyone :)

ave369 - 31-7-2015 at 05:11

It says on the wiki that it is being moved. But it is not said where. Is the wiki working at all?

The Official Sciencemadness Wiki (Beta)

Texium - 12-8-2015 at 10:23

I am proud to announce that the beta version of the official Sciencemadness Wiki is now fit for public use, and it is on sciencemadness.org as it should be. We're still working out some kinks, but it's pretty navigable. Not a whole lot has been added since it was migrated from Wikia, but we do now have the ability to make infoboxes, which will eventually be included on all chemical compound and element pages. We're also stressing that only pictures taken by SM members will be included on the wiki (not including diagrams, only actual photos). Unfortunately, accounts from the forum do not transfer directly to the wiki, so if you'd like to become an editor, send me a U2U about it and I will create an account for you.

Special thanks to Polverone for setting it up, and to all of the editors who helped move the pages over from Wikia!

annaandherdad - 12-8-2015 at 16:01

It looks very nice, and will be extremely useful. I like the style of the articles I looked at, and the hints for amateur chemists (suggested projects etc). Thanks for all your effort.

DeIonized Plasma - 12-8-2015 at 18:29

Wow! Definitely using that for future work.

Side note - SF Bay chemist here, noticed your signature asking about it (annaandherdad). Feel free to U2U me or whatever you had in mind. As far as I know you are the only other person in the bay area, although there is one person maybe 50 miles north/northeast of SF and then a handful around the LA area.

I seem to be having trouble logging in. My standard sciencemadness username/pwd does not work, and the login page does not provide a link to creating an account. Going to "help with logging in">"Create an account" creates a mediaWiki account, however this account does not work with the sciencemadness wiki.

It would be nice if your sciencemadness account could be in some way linked to the wiki account, but I understand if polverone is too busy to cater to my whims.

Polverone has told me in the past that it may be possible to link the accounts, but it would be very difficult and take a long time to set it up if it is even possible. Now, accounts must be created by someone who is an admin on the wiki, so I will create an account for you and send you the password via U2U. Polverone understandably doesn't want random internet people who aren't members to be able to sign up and edit the wiki.

DeIonized Plasma - 12-8-2015 at 20:26

I am noticing that some pictures are not functional on the wiki. A few examples:

Copper (II) Sulfate
Sodium Silicate
Lead (II) Oxide

I found them by clicking arbitrary chemicals in the list of compounds, and I am sure there are many more articles similarly missing images.

Could you add me as an editor and U2U me the details too? Thanks!

Texium - 12-8-2015 at 20:51

We're still transferring pictures from the old wiki. Amos has downloaded all of them onto his computer and has some systematic method of reuploading them, though I'm not 100% sure what it is. I do know though that he is taking this opportunity to remove pictures that aren't of very good quality, so there will be some pictures that won't be transferred over from the old wiki and will need to be replaced with better quality pictures. I trust his judgement. If you'd like to help with pictures, you could contact him, he might have something for you to do. Otherwise, just add pages that interest you, and flesh out any existing pages that you feel could use more information. I put some useful links for editors over in the sidebar on the left, so you can check those out too.

Mabus - 15-8-2015 at 09:45

I can't upload large images on the wiki (I'm trying to upload the hexamine tablets picture). Even after one hour it was still loading. Anyone else have that problem?

Texium - 17-8-2015 at 10:24

Just found this thread: http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=11054
Thought it was interesting. It's too bad that peach and watson.fawkes aren't around anymore, they probably would have liked to contribute to the new wiki.

The Volatile Chemist - 21-8-2015 at 12:14

Indeed, it's too bad. Could someone post a link to the new wiki? I have an account, forgot the url :/

Texium - 5-9-2015 at 15:53

I'd like to thank Mabus and ave369 for being such regular contributors to the wiki. They both edit it nearly every day, which is an amazing level of commitment. I'd also like to encourage others to edit it more frequently, and I'm certainly not leaving myself out of that. If the wiki is to become a useful tool, it will need a large base of editors to keep adding more useful information. Now that we have the ability to create infoboxes, there's a whole new array of information that we can add to it. If you're new to the wiki and would like to start editing, send me a U2U and I will create an account for you. Anyone from SM is welcome to contribute, just make sure to follow the editing guidelines.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Mabus - 8-9-2015 at 09:13

As Burt Gummer would say: Doing what I can with what I got :)

Mabus - 12-1-2016 at 07:55

What's the deal with Zts16's Potassium dichromate image? The thumbnail is different from the image I uploaded.

gdflp - 12-1-2016 at 08:27

I just checked. The image you uploaded was named "Potassium dichromate.jpg", while the original one on the wiki from zts was named "Potassium_dichromate.jpg". HTML can't handle spaces in file names, so it replaces them with underscores. Thus the file you uploaded has the same name as the already existing one, so the wiki tried to overwrite it, but I guess it didn't update the thumbnail. Is the one on the potassium dichromate page right now the one you uploaded, or the old one?

Mabus - 12-1-2016 at 12:42

The old one. Didn't even know there was another image by that name, as there was a broken link and I thought there was no image uploaded.
The one I uploaded was this one:
Code:
http://sciencemadness.wikia.com/wiki/File:Potassium_dichromate.jpg

EDIT: What the hell? The forum can't tell hyperlink from emoticons? (The ":" from "File:" and the "P" from "Potassium" are read as ":P")
First time it happened to me.

If yours is better than mine and you want to replace it, I can delete mine.

Mabus - 13-1-2016 at 09:51

By "yours", you mean this one, right? In that case, yes, this one should be kept.

Texium - 13-1-2016 at 15:49

Yeah, that's the picture that I uploaded. Is that the one that you want to use? For me, it is the one that shows up on the page already.

Mabus - 14-1-2016 at 10:28

Yes, that one.

Texium - 22-1-2016 at 21:21

I originally posted this in the Topical Compendium thread:

Now you can find it here: http://www.sciencemadness.org/smwiki/index.php/Topical_Compe...
The Elements chapter is a reformatted version of bfesser's original. I've transferred everything from it, along with the additions proposed by elementcollector1 at the beginning of this thread.

If you don't have wiki editing access yet but want to work on it, feel free to U2U me and I will create an account for you.

crystal grower - 28-1-2016 at 04:20

Can anyone delete these pages please ?

http://www.sciencemadness.org/smwiki/index.php/Antimony.jpg

http://www.sciencemadness.org/smwiki/index.php/Sodiumperchlo...

They were created mistakenly.
Thanks.

Since there is now a whole subforum dedicated to the wiki and various topics pertaining to it may be discussed in their own threads, I am going to close this thread, but leave it here stickied so that it will remain to document the history of the Wiki's development up to this point.
