Asphalt, also called bitumen is a sticky, black, and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. It may be found in natural deposits or may be a refined product, and is classed as a pitch.

In many parts of the world, the term "asphalt" is often used short for "asphalt concrete".

General properties

Asphalt is a black sticky semi-solid. It has a characteristic odor, which becomes stronger when heated.

Availability

Can be bought online or from construction suppliers.

DIY asphalt

The non-volatile fraction of crude petroleum consists mostly of asphalt and pitch.

Projects

  • Make roads
  • Seal lids and cracks

Handling and safety

Asphalt is sticky and will cause a mess if proper protection is not worn when handling the compound.
