Rubber earplugs

An earplug is a device that is meant to be inserted in the ear canal to protect the user's ears from loud noises or the intrusion of water or foreign bodies.

General

Earplugs consist of plug-like items, often made of soft rubber, foam or wax. Some models are connected with a string.

Earplugs vs earmuffs

Earplugs are less effective at blocking loud noises than earmuffs, and do not cover the whole ear. Earplugs however, are easier to carry than earmuffs, as they're smaller.

Availability

Earplugs can be bought from most hardware stores. Price depends on the brand and quality.

DIY earplug

A simple earplug can be made by stuffing cotton in your ear, or a piece of foam.

Safety

Careful when inserting earplugs in your ear, as you may risk damage your eardrum if you stuff it too deep.

Earplugs don't offer protection as good as earmuffs.
