A funnel, sometimes referred to as plain funnel, is a tube with a wide (often conical or hemispherical) mouth and a narrow stem. It is used to channel liquid or fine-grained substances into containers with a small opening.
Contents
General
Funnels are often made of plastic, glass, metal (stainless steel, aluminium, brass, glazed steel) or glazed ceramic (though Büchner funnels are more often encountered than plain funnels). Lab funnels come in various shapes and sizes, most often they are separated in two categories: funnels with short stem and funnels with long stem. Some funnels also come with a ground glass joint, useful when needing to pour large grain size solids in a flask, or you just don't want your funnel to wobble when you pour solids or liquids in a flask.
Availability
Lab funnels can be bought from lab suppliers. Price depends on the size, type and material.
Most hardware stores tend to have plastic and metal funnels, of varying quality.
DIY funnel
You can create a makeshift funnel by cutting the upper part of a plastic (or even glass) bottle. Same technique works for metal.
Wrapping a sheet of paper in the form of a cone can also serve as funnel.
Projects
- Pour liquids
- Make aq. ammonia and acid solutions
