he mentions an "Organic dye" but there`s no further specifications other than Orange or Blue are the best to use.

does anyone know what they are?

At a guess I'd say they're aniline dyes.

They're certainly what's used in commercial smoke comps + they're organic.
Daytime boat "flares" are an excellent source of the orange one at least....

It is a messy solid which colors everything blue or which color you use..

It can be obtained through paint and ceramic stores.
