Missing persons
This board has been home to some wonderful personalities. Some of them appear for a while then suddenly disappear. Some have made great
contributions in the past but are unknown to newer users. I often find myself wondering what happened to them.
This thread is dedicated to such. And to the question of "Where are they now?"
zombie
One of the greats. His own brand of irreverent humour and irrepressible enthusiasm. I would love to know how his lab is coming together.
hkparker
I only know him from his excellent yt channel. He was a big contributor a few years back, disappeared for a while and then returned to sell his gear.
Anyone know what he is up to now?
len1
Prolific and knowledgeable. Some classic write-ups and I believe fondly remembered. I am sure someone knows the story.
JohnWW
Ok, this maybe is an obscure one. And I admit to not doing a full search on his posts. My interest is related to some things on his profile rather
than his chemistry posts. But he was a very eager participant here and has a huge post count. Then suddenly, nothing.
myst32
Ok, this one is not really a mystery. He explained himself here. Not a big poster (under that name) but a fantastic yt channel. I wonder what he is up to now. Given a chance I'd say thank you
personally.
Robert Bruce Thompson
Not a member here to my knowledge. His book is mentioned regularly and is one I think I should get. He has obviously been busy in producing books
and in his work in the field of home schooling. But his YT channel ended abruptly. His lab is probably the neatest and most organised home lab that
I have seen. I am curious as to why he stopped.

Personalities move on, get busy with other things, die etc.
Some re-incarnate with new usernames (repeatedly it seems recently).
Doing/posting interesting Chemistry might one day see the return of the likes of len1.
Patience.

What about vulture? I know he was around a little while ago, but it seems he's gone off as well.

vulture is still a mod too.
I guess this is basically j_sum1's wishlist, or an assumed list of absent/popular members.
Personally i would like to see CHRIS25 back here as well.

hkparker's radio silence was due to his graduating high school and leaving home to go to college. He probably is gone at least until he graduates.

Add DrAldehyde to the list... Tried contacting a number of times after buying a fume hood, none replied to. Sale was perfect, great price, no issues
so contact wasnt negative in any way. Seemed like a really nice individual. The only SM member ive met in person sadly

He moved on, I have had dealings with him in other matters more recently than his last posts. Still, he will be missed. I do like that madscientist
drops by a few times a year just to show he hasn't dropped totally off the radar. Vulture though, yeah, I still feel like he's watching.
IIRC - JohnWW had a falling out with the forum. I remember personally butting heads with him a few times. My favorite was in this thread.

Sadly many of the missing are seniors, elderly people likely no longer in the world, attributable to natural or unnatural causes.
The "old farts" are interesting because they are too old to give a damn about being ideologically correct and will give you unfiltered unvarnished
version observations about any topic whatever. Having one foot already in the grave, they simply don't care anymore about pretentiousness or about
threatened "consequences" for PC "misbehavior", even "fear of death as a penalty" becomes almost a joke which would be equivalent to fearing the
"threat" of being put out of ones misery Old people, like children are
subject to saying any damn thing whatever....absent the "filter" of "it's true, ...but to be PC nobody should say it". They are then liberated by
circumstances inclined to be brutally honest, take no prisoners, not PC, very straight shooters
Added to the missing, quicksilver, watson.fawkes,
The WiZard is In
And about Vulture.....affectionately "Big Bird" ....I tended to regard him as
a kindred spirit "old buzzard"

I know that Organikum is still alive but unable to visit the forum at present. I saw watson.fawkes in person less than a month ago at a space
conference. He just doesn't visit here any more because he felt that it was distracting him from tasks he wanted to spend more time on.
I agree with Rosco that a number of cases are likely due to age catching up with members; that seems the most likely explanation for quicksilver's
abrupt disappearance. I miss not_important. I don't know if he was old enough for that explanation to be most likely in his case.

len1 is Leonid Lerner, a New Zealander now living in Australia as far as I know.
I gather he used his time on ScienceMadness as a sounding board for some of the procedures he used in his book - "Small-Scale Synthesis of Laboratory
Reagents with Reaction Modeling"
Graduating with a BSc (Hons.) in 1984 and a MSc in 1985 from the Victoria University of Wellington, Leonid Lerner obtained his PhD in physics from
Cambridge University, UK, in 1989. From 1990–1993 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Optical Science Centre and Laser Physics Centre of the
Australian National University (ANU), and a lecturer in Physics ANU 1994–1996. Leonid has worked in a number of different fields in the natural
sciences and has published in a range of scientific disciplines. Currently he is a research scientist at the Defence Science and Technology
Organisation, Adelaide, and Honorary Fellow at the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences, Flinders University, Adelaide. (from Amazon)

I have to say, I miss Tacho, an excellent contributor to the forum.
Also, it's a shame NurdRage stopped coming around but glad he still makes videos.

Hey that's where I live, cool! Might run into him, especially if i'm lucky enough to score some work at the DSTO when I graduate.

I miss garage chemist. He had the most knowledge and insight into chemistry, IMO. His skill was built on active experimentation. He was a leader in
many ways.
I also miss benzylchloride1. He was precocious, starting his PhD study at the University of Utah at an early age. The last I heard from him he had
earned his degree. He's probably too busy now with a job and family to pursue this hobby.
I miss Sauron, his wit, and his wealth of experience. I suspect he is enfeebled or dead.
I miss Len1. I think he was the most erudite of all our contributors.

len1, organikum -- both in Oz. Yay for aussie chemistry.
If you do get within range of len1, Tdep, do look him up.
Yeah there are a number of names here of note.
Let me add another. I always wondered what happened to gardul's cats. Doing chem in a small apartment was always going to have issues though.
[edit]
Thanks for the link to deuterated acetone, Bromicacid. The whole thing looked like a bit of a mud-sling. Interesting to see how board culture has
and hasn't changed since 2004. That was a more technical mud sling than we are used to now. Vulture's admonition concerning single line posts was
also interesting.

He still is actively posting on http://labphoto.tumblr.com/
Since he seemed to mostly be here to share photos I can imagine him losing interest quickly. Chemistry is his job, not a hobby.

I miss
Madhatter: Who maintained a FTP for forum members.
Ayush: Was a prolific references getter just like our present angel Solo.
Alter: Who uploaded complete archives of several journals like J med Chem, Chem Rev, JACS, JOC, I & EC etc etc to madhatter's FTP. BTW this
predated sci-hub.
KmnO4: who had wonderful internet searching knack and also uploaded several books and journals.
I also miss Not_Important, Watson.fawkes, Garage Chemist amongst many others.
