chemsketch
Shown below is the chemsketch formula for acetic acid. Would someone please tell me how to convert this to the acetate ion.
Thanks for your help.

The H attached to the O dissociates in water with a constant of 4.76pKa, making H+ and CH3COO-ions. I hope that answers what you are asking... or do
you know something I don't?

I think what he means is how to do it in the actual program. Unfortunately, I only have experience using ChemDraw (amazing program, by the way) and
BKChem, so I couldn't tell you exactly; however, if it's anything like ChemDraw, you would just select the text tool and click on the hydroxyl group,
then delete the H. The program would then alert you that oxygen doesn't have enough bonds to be neutral. Then simply select the symbol for a negative
charge and put it on oxygen. Or if you really want to get fancy, you could add a dashed double bond (one solid, one dashed) between both oxygens to
show electron delocalization, and then put the negative charge symbol right in-between them.

Yeah, I was caught off-guard by his question, too.

Yes, I want to know how to do this in chemsketch .
I find that chemsketch is hard to use. This is most likely because I don't use it often. But also could be due to the fact that I did not grow up
using computers. It has one big advantage, however: it is free.

I enjoy chemsketch and find the drawing tools more intuitive than chemdraw (and often used it in place of such when I still had access).
To change charges, on the structure side, look under the elements on the left side at the bottom. There is a small button that looks like >> but
pointing downward. Click that, then the tab that has a + sign (middle one), and select -
Then, click on the oxygen and it will remove the H and add a - sign.

I just downloaded the free program Chemsketch and I am looking forward to playing with it. If you Google "chemsketch tutorial" you will get a list of
several Youtube videos and PDF's.

FYI,
There is another free download called ISISDraw. It's pretty sophisticated but, in my opinion and experience, easier to use than CHEMDraw. It does have
a learning curve but is worth the effort.

That is not a very friendly sounding name Hopefully the FBI won't show up at
my house downloading a file with a name similar to a Muslim extremist organization.

They wanted to let you go at first but after they saw your username in SM they changed their minds.
(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
