Glass filter funnel question.
Hi! I've always used the normal Buckner filter funnels plugged into a rubber stopper and filter papers up to this point. However, I have a quick
question. On those Sand-Core filter funnels at around 15-40 Micron, do you recommend using filter paper on top of the core as well? What are the
different conditions that one decides to use filter paper along with it, if any?

If the pore size of your paper is larger than that of your Sand-Core I don't really see the point in using it all. And if your Sand-core pores are
larger than your paper pores, what's the point in using the Sand-Core?

Hydrogen bubbles evolving from a metal surface in contact with acid? The grid points being atoms in a crystal lattice?

He doesn't know what it is. It's a wallpaper.
I however do know, and I won't tell SunriseSunset !
I thought there was an advantage to using paper over a frit. I would think it would protect the frit, and allow you to remove your product easily.
I have a frit funnel, and I was planning on using it this way. Perhaps SunriseSunset, and I can both learn something on this.
They tried to have me "put to sleep" so I came back to return the favor.

It would be a good idea to use a filter paper because solid particles would get trapped in its fibers rather than the pits of the glass filter.
If you are going to filter something like conc H2SO4, then using a filter paper is not a good idea since it will liquify.

Yeah, I use fritted funnels, and I've found that when filtering stuff that might get stuck in the frit (especially stuff that's hard to clean), it's
good to use filter paper over it to keep it clean. Otherwise cleaning the frit could take a lot of time and effort. Also, as Zombie pointed out, it
does make it easier to retrieve your product.
And about your signature SunriseSunset... nobody is jealous, it's just kind of obnoxious. Some people on this forum think that MY signature
is too big, and it's got nothing on the voluminousness of yours. It would probably be a good idea to shrink, crop, or remove the big picture.

I've always thought that it would be a good idea to use a larger pore fritted funnel with smaller pored filter paper since it would increase the
active filtering area over merely perforated discs. With the standard Buchner funnel you can only pull solution through the filter paper directly
over top of the holes. With a frit you have lots of little holes. Also, the paper would be better supported and your vacuum is less likely to suck a
hole through the filter paper.

Ok I minimized my sig. It was kind of obnoxious. I was used to even larger sigs, coming from a certain gaming-clan community.
Yeah. so it sounds best to use cut-down coffee filters for size and stack two of them perhaps on top of the frit so that I don't risk damaging the
frit when using the spatula.. or I'll try to find some filter paper that uses slightly larger micron rating than the frit to help catch the larger
solids.
But I understand what you said, agent_entropy, that makes sense to me too.
