Can i extract Clove oil by alcohol?
Hello
This may seem pretty simple and i could have searched for it but i need a fast answer...
Can i just simply extract clove oil by soaking grinded dried cloves in ethanol and stir it vigorously then evaporate it?
Edit:typo

What? Waiting for a response is faster than doing a search?

I wanna someone to say that this way should work ...

Oh I see... looking up the structure of eugenol, the main compound in clove oil, explains a few things...

Yes, you can.
However, your oil will be brown, contamined by impurities.
Steam distill it and you will have a clear, slightly yellow, very pure oil.
Steam distillation of clove oil is a textbook classic because it works very well.
I wish you good luck and more straight answers.

Thanks Tacho , chemoleo pardon me but what that means:- "Oh I see... looking up the structure of eugenol, the main compound in clove oil, explains a
few things..."
I asked someone and he told me that this wouldn't work because clove oil is volatile and it will evaporate with the EtOH and the only way would be
Steam distillation..............

Actually it would work, because eugenol boiling point is 253 Celsius. And Ethanol just 78 C... So... extracting eugenol from clove buds/leafs with
ethanol and then evaporating ethanol would work ,but as Tacho said it would be contamined by impurities.

alnokta,
I have never done the experiment of alcohol extraction myself, but i have played with eugenol, and, although it is volatile (hence it's strong smell),
it is not even close to the volatility of alcohol. I guess it takes weeks for a drop of eugenol to evaporate. If not so, how would it stay in the
clove in the first place? Can you imagine something like an alcolhol impregnated piece of wood beeing sold months after its beeing picked and still
retain the alcohol?
But, if you want purity, go for the steam distillation.

Wasn't it possible to convert eugenol to MDMA or something similar?

It worked !!!
Using 70% alcohol and grinded cloves ... i wonder if the concentration of alcohol matters?
But as you said ... it was full of impurities(may be because i used toilet paper instead of filter paper) ... the yield was satisfactory ... about
2gm(12-14 buds) gives ~0.5ml with contamination.
Anyway i want to try the other way ...... what do you think of a steam distillation apparatus that will cost me around 30USD?
