say goodbye to azeotropes!!
sick of not getting yer 99% EtOH?
just found out about one amasing procedure to seperate binary azeotrope mixtures which employs CO2.
Its relatively simple:
consider two chambers separated by a porous wall (brick, clay,..). one chamber is filled w the binary mix and evaporated by a heating plate the other
chamber is filled w CO2 gas.
procedure is as follows:
wait
wait
wait some more.
open the chambers- what you have now is 2 mixtures of supstance A+CO2 and B+CO2. if you dont know how to separate them from CO2, than you shouldnt
read this.
voila!
of course its not as easy as it seems, since you have to specify the porousity of the material, but apart from that its as easy as it gets-plus

sorry java but that would get swim in some serious trouble, since the research is not done by swimself only and there are even friggin cameras in the
lab, so taking pics would raise some eyebrows. theyre even keeping the "porous material" specs secret....but not for long if ya ask swim...hehehe.
theyre greedy polutin fukkers and swim will be quitting anyways( swim heard that one more person from the staff disclosed the info to the local uni,
and that means free info for all!)

daeron, sure hope the company you are (or should I now say were?) working for doesn't come across this. Anyway, that was entirely generous of you to "leak" this info.
I'll take a stab at speculation now... the "porous material" is some sort of new ceramic or exotic polymer perhaps?

yeah well thanks for the praise but its not entirely leaking info, this idea for the new separation technology is around for some 2yrs, but you wont
find it because of its highly retarded name. plus i swims contract is runnin out and he absolutely hates xxxx-yyyy and the way theyre grabbing 100s of
patents just to ensure they will never be used...well not until theres oil around.
of course youre right on the both guesses(its not hard), but the problem comes with the definition of the "exotic polymer". there are two researches
going on with the "special material" as the call them for the usual azeotrope separations and with the exotic polymer membranes for bioseparations
which are still in the development stage.
for those whom are actually interested in the principle it is quite simple:
you have 2 molecules that you want to separate, with different Mws. On the other hand you have CO2 or some other inert gas, which is the actual
separation agent. How? well lets look at the diffusion.
The whole point is that the molecules travel through the porous media with different velocity profiles, since we have the wall slip and knudsen diff
effects. Now add CO2 going the other way and colliding with the molecules-as a result you have the situation were one molecule(the bigger one) is
literally "kicked back" by the CO2 collisions.
the reason why swim posted this here is because of the fact that almost any porous media can be used. so why they use "special materials"? because of
the feasibility, expressed through the actual time of the separation.
but a home chemist or a bee has all the time in the world, so that is not an issue.
when swim finds some free time he would really like to construct a small setup to check out how its working. first start with plain ol brick, than
some zeolites maybe clay.... however theres the problem of the residence time, ie when to open the setup....
shit so many ideas to be further researched-to finish the Mw demethylations(swim thinks that Mw chemistry in the end is not suitable for a bee, sadly
since its so fascinating), AcO indoles,this...so little time. life is cruel
