Assaying alloys

How would you go about assaying stuff? Seperating aluminum and copper I can figure, for instance copper isn't soluble in base... but what of aluminum and zinc? Or magnesium and copper, which are both insoluble as hydroxides and as bases.

So yeah, my chemistry is about limited to ion exchanges... ideas?
