Preparation of cyclic-ketone compounds
I do know that when H2SO4 is added to CH3CHO, the trimer of CH3CHO, (CH3CHO)3, is catalytically formed. I'm curious about the possibility of a similar
reaction occurring with ketones. I would also be interested to know the mechanism of the reaction. I recently initiated an experiment. I placed 70mL
of water in a beaker, and added 15mL 98% H2SO4. Temperature was about 30C. I then added 50mL CH3COCH3. Small bubbles streamed towards the surface for
a short period of time; I assume those bubbles were composed of gas that had been sloshed into the liquid in the beaker when pouring the acetone. I
then placed the beaker in an ice bath (so that higher isomers would be prepared). No change was observed after an hour. It likely is that the
(CH3COCH3)x that was (hopefully) formed was dissolved by the acetone. More news on this experiment tomorrow.

I weep at the sight of flaming acetic anhydride.
