RDX from dilute HNO3
Hello
I read a thread on here on the PETN thread that gives a table for calculating the amount of H2SO4 to add to HNO3, when dilute.
Would this same technique work for RDX? I wouldn't think so. Everything I've read indicates it needs 90% percent but as the PETN similarly requires
high percentage, I wondered if if the sulfurics effect on the water in the HNO3 might make it work able. I think no but just thought I'd ask and
consider it a learning experience. It seems distillation of the hno3 is unavoidable.
I can try find the mention post if needed

Sulfuric acid decomposes hexamine. That's why mixed acid can't be used in the production of RDX. WFNA has to be used instead.

What about 70% Nitric acid and P2O5 ? Will it increase RDX yeild ? or some HMX along with it ? I've seen Ac2O/HNO3, however I havent seen HNO3/P2O5
nitration on hexamine yet.

yes it will.. indeed it will
P2O5 produces acetic acid with water
the question is ratios, you might wanna experiment and write down some ratios that work?

this regards HMX and DPT from HDN, if im not entirely wrong, another compound near if not above RDX's properties

Sheeesh! P2O5is the anhydride of phosphoric acid!

I was just about to point that out, he probably made a mistake... any ways, P2O5 seem to work, ofcourse ill record whatever i do, if I ever have the
chance. Shipping through dubai is a hard...long...expensive process.

Save your money ─ if P2O5 worked in the nitrolysis it'd be very widely known . . .

Well it is, its used in many synthesis. P2O5 could also produce NO2+ like sulfuric acid.

I guess it will need to just distill it. I didn't think so, but thought I'd ask. I do remember seeing a tek posted here involved Glacial Acetic Acid.
Though I don't think it had good yields.

Anyone ever try mixed acid nitration of Hexamine or HDN using 70% HNO3 and excess 85% H3PO4 ?
