Help with a crappy *rduino CNC laser engraver
Basically I got tossed one, but I can't get the software to run. It's the same unit as this: https://zdrav-mag.ru/raznoe/acan-mini-laser-engraving-progra...
The board has a single STC15W404AS-chip (plus two A4988-drivers) which I gather is a 8051-controller and a prolific 2303 usb-to-serial.
What are my options here? Can I reflash the board with a more current program?

No reason why you can't update the firmware - just make sure that whatever firmware you choose will allow you to configure the port pins to suit your
stepper driver connections.

Ok, but which firmware and how? The Arduino IDE doesn't recognize it, it just lists the prolific 2303. I'm not really that into the *rduino eco system
and I can't seem to find a simple page that can guide me through it.
Right now I'm considering rewiring it for a UNO-based kit I have. It has bigger NEMA17 motors, but I'll have to make some pulley wheels for it.

I dont use arduino at all, so I can't speak to specifics. But if the IDE doesn't recognise the board as an arduino board, then someone has probably
messed up the bootloader on the board. Or the controller is simply borked - which would explain why the software doesn't work.
Your second option sounds better : replacing the controller. Theres no need to replace the motors, although you might need to adjust the drive
current on your new controller.

That's what I ended doing. The kit is a knockoff UNO/V3.00 combo which seems to work. I read the current off the original 4988's, so the steppers
should be safe. Now I just have to figure out the wiring for the laser.
Update: It's alive. Next up is figuring out what software I need.

Knockoff Arduinos usually have cheap Chinese UART chips. Often times one has to install special USB drivers to get them to talk to the IDE.

A bunch of the clone boards do not have the bootstrapping circuit which will place the MCU into flash mode. Got any buttons?
Basic Arduino troubleshooting steps.
1) Check your baud rate.
2) check your cable. Rx/tx lights are useful for this
Post some pictures of the mcu board. I didnt see them in your link and can not read many languages
