Hi. We know many reactions and what formaldehyde can be used for. Consider getting dioxolane for example and other organic compounds, as a reducing agent and so on. Let us consider the following reactions today.

•I found some information in Ukrainian Wikipedia. It was written that In an alkaline environment it reduces oxides and hydroxides of silver , gold , copper , mercury , bismuth and Nickel to metals. It seems very easy. I tried mercury oxide and black powder was formed. I will try other oxides.

•Formaldoxime is known to be used to test metals. It is used as a reagent for the photometric determination of manganese (II), iron (II), nickel (II), cerium (IV) and vanadium (V) ions.(from german wiki) Formaldoxime forms red-brown complexes with Mn 3+ and violet complexes with Fe 2+ .
3CH3NO + Mn3+ = (CH3NO)Mn + 3H+
Those who like to work on solutions will find it interesting

•I have seen this substance in organic synthesis. It can be made quite easily here, but I do not know how stable it is.
