UK source for stains & microbio stuff
Hey all,
As my un suggests I'm a chemist at heart but am getting very into microbiology on a budget. I bit the bullet and bought a microscope with an immersion
lens but am after a variety of stains and can't really justify buying multiple grams of stain when I'd use maybe 2% of it.
Sooo, does anyone:
1) have some stains they can donate/exchange for organic chemistry advice/micrographs of what ever you want to send to me.
2) know someone/somewhere where I can get a selection of stains to trial before buying?
3) know of alternative dyes that would work as bacteriological stains?
Thanks in advance

Crystal violet is pretty cheap at Himedia, and very useful for Gram stains. I see $16 for 25 grams. I'm not sure it's available in the UK though, but
check Amazon.

Look in eBay, for example https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Microscope-Slide-Stain-Dye-Chemic...
You can get small amounts (up to 25g) of dyes from various Chinese seller on eBay uk for a few pounds but delivery times are up to 8 weeks.
I am wg48 but not on my usual pc hence the temp handle.

i bought a few of those stains from that seller, my best friend is into microscopy, so i gave him 50 euros worth of stains for his birthday. The
shipping time is not that bad, i this it took 2 weeks, but yeah if he is on a really tight budget going on a shopping spree might not be the best.
the problem is that you can get something cheap only if you buy in bulk, like that 0.5% potassium permanganate solution, it is £4.70, and in the past
i bought 1Kg of KMnO4 for 20 euros, i spent more but i also got a lot more of the stuff.

Here in the US, I bought similar items from Home Science Tools, a company that caters to the home-schooling crowd. They and similar companies sell
small quantities of many chemicals, including stains for microscopy. The unit price is high but the quantity is kept low for shipping purposes.
Perhaps you can find a similar company in your country.
