Turpentine with spearmint oil does work very well and is OTC

90%+ Yield of crude material from tryptophane (extracted with 5% AcOH and precipitated with aq. NaOH).

70-80% of pure material after destillation.

In some forums I read that DMF (also OTC in some countries) does work nearly quantitative without any catalysts, but workup sucks.

Caraway oil works as well. It and spearmint oil are enantiomers (carvone).

Have you considered camphor? Cheap and easy enough to find.

I weep at the sight of flaming acetic anhydride.

Acetophenone is considered excellent for such work.

Assuming that this material can be formed in good yield by the pyrolysis of Pb or Fe--acetate and Benzoic Acid. Why not use these cheap, readily available materials to make yourself a liter or so of acetophenone?
