FOUR children are in hospital after a science experiment went
wrong at a school in Preston. [Australia]

About 20 students, aged about 12, were in the room when an
experiment with magnesium went wrong.

Paramedics were called to St John’s College in Railway Place West
just after 1pm.

Paramedic Stephen Moody said ambulance crews were told a
contained of magnesium ignited, causing a large flash and a plume
of magnesium smoke.

“Paramedics assessed the children for sore throats, coughs, chest
tightness and potential injuries,” he said.

Four children and two teachers suffered minor effects.

Three boys were taken to the Northern Hospital, and one to the
Austin Hospital, all in a stable condition.

The teachers told paramedics they would make their own way to
hospital.

“All involved are incredibly lucky. The children sitting closest to the
table were thankfully wearing proper eye protection, otherwise
they may have suffered quite serious burns,” Mr Moody said.

The other children were checked by paramedics and returned to
class.

I bet the media would love this. It appears they did it right, and no serious harm was caused. Proper eye protection, prompt emergency management.

BUT OH NOEZ TEH SPLODES.

“If Edison had a needle to find in a haystack, he would proceed at once with the diligence of the bee to examine straw after straw until he found the object of his search.
I was a sorry witness of such doings, knowing that a little theory and calculation would have saved him ninety per cent of his labor.”

Talk about amateur science going wrong.

What about that time, a bunch of inexperienced guys got together, to experiment with fusion?

Like many of our own members, these amateurs were rather intrepid. Perhaps even overconfident. As a result, they put together an experiment, that unexpectedly got way out of control. Whoops!
