Fun with Moly(bdeum)
Reactions between transition-metal (V, VI) chlorides and
alkali-metal sulphides are extremely vigorous, highly exothermic
and visually dramatic. For example, the redox reaction
MoCl5 + 5/ 2 Na2S --> MoS2 + 5NaCl + 1/2S
can self-ignite or be detonated with a hot filament (at 40-60)
producing an intense flash of light and generating molten sodium
chloride. Some of the more volatile reaction components, such as
excess sulphur and any unreacted metal chloride, are volatilized
instantly. Crystallizing within a few seconds in a rapid cooling salt
flux, pure molybdenum disulphide is then isolated simply by
washing with chloroform or carbon disulphide, water and methanol.
