Fume Cupboard
Hello all!
I have just bought a fume cupboard of Ebay. The seller i bought it off seemed nice and helpful and orgnaised postage nicely.
After i had recieved the fume hood and put it in place, a day later i got a call and a visit from the police asking lots of questions why i bought it,
intended use ect...
I am 14 years old so i made up lots of rubbish about school projects ect...
So my question, why is a fume cupboard a watched item nowerdays?!?!
I have sent a member here, Saber a message as he seems to know a lot about registering you lab and dealing with police but if anyone else has some
advise that would be most appreciated.
I am Located in England.
Many thanks,
XYZ

Uh-Oh, no drugs or explosives, then. . .
You'll just have to find more mundane (safer) uses for the thing!
Meth residues on the hood from the seller's previous "activities" may have caught the interest of the sorting-office sniffer dogs!
I'm just joking!
At 14 you're probably the youngest here, and you're welcome aboard.
Seriously, if you can take some advice; try to stick with chemistry that won't mess up your health or your liberty?

Just out of interest how much does it cost to send a fume cupboard through the post?

Please trust me, i have no intention on going into producing drugs, well to an extent.
At the moment i am in the middle of a synthesis of certain topical pain killers (PABA derivatives) and also may start azo dyes, derived from
phenylamine. I have been into chemistry since i was 10, and have only wandered 'off course' last year when i make a couple of fireworks.
The fume hood i got was brand new so i hope there are no residues on it. I will clean it now just incase. Can anybody reccomend a solvent that will
destroy any residues?
Dear itchyfruit- It cost me £45 to send the hood through the post, with a company called BPS world cargo.

that any crime has been or is about to be committed, I would call them Pigs or Gestapo! Have you thought of asking them WHO gave them your name and
address, and WHY? If they refuse to say, you should see a lawyer and go to the Police Complaints Authority.
In my country, and also the U$A (although the Bill Of Rights there is frequently flouted by corrupt cops), unreasonable and unwarranted searches and
seizures like that would be prohibited by human rights legislation.

Well my guess was the seller handed me in. The thing is i dont care whatsoever... If they check me out it means they check other people out and if
they do that it means they bust REAL drug cooks, which is a good thing right???
Yes my dad is a lawyer so if i run into any 'trouble' again he will help
The fume hood was located in London and i am not far from there but to be honest i do think it is pretty reasonable. I had quotes form big names like
parcel force and TNT and they were all in the £100 + region so i was very pleased to find this company. The item wheighs around 100kg and is pretty
big!

Labxyz, why do I have the impression that you are Picric-A in disguise? Something about this username and eBay jumps out at me as being VERY
familiar....

I doubt he is.
Labxyz, for your info panziandi, and Picric A have had conflicts over trading various items, one being a fumehood. So I think this is where it stems
from. There is a thread that discusses it a bit if you are interested I could find it for you.
Also lately a member or two has been signing up under different names to avoid their reputation or something like that, so this could also cause
him/others questioning you.
Either way, very nice find! How much did the fumehood cost? I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of it.

Oh very amuzing! This has me in hysteria! I find it highly unlikely that a 14 year old home chemist in England who had a fume cupboard transported
from London to his home in the country who is using a username (Labxyz) on Sciencemadness which is the same username another guy from Sciencemadness
(Picric-A) uses on ebay (Labxyz) who is also a home chemist, in England, who had a fume cupboard located in London and transported to his home in the
country. Very VERY unlikely, but comical all the same.

I can certainly see his point, and I wouldn't call that paranoia at all, you pretty much have an incentive to get a new screen name and as he pointed
out, same names, same place, same subject (fumehood), etc.
I'm still pretty suspicious.

Might it be something to do with your singular, clownish lack of originality, by any chance. . .

I think we established that I never received the Br2, and you have established you sent it, so between you sending it and me supposedly receiving it,
it was lost in the post, and I did not ask you to get me any more, I went and purchased my own. We agree to disagree on this matter! I still don't
believe you ever sent it, nor do I believe you ever intended to give me the hood, and ratehr you let me waste my time driving from uni to home to
prepare to receive it. And conversely you do not believe that I never received the Br2. That's life.
