I just got my Christmas Postcard from Maine. Looks like my brorthers driving years ago in NC. I spent 4 years in upstate NY, so I got some practice there, but in NC, the DOT's policy is, "God put it there, he will take it away" when it comes to plowing. Our town's snow plow is often stuck once there is any snow. But thanks for the fun and the Christmas Spirit. I'm trying to prepare some Secret Santa packages now.

Snow

Dr. Bob,

I can identify with what you're saying about "delays" in snow plowing. When I lived
in Maryland, 6 inches of snow caused widespread panic among Marylanders ! They
might not get plowed for 2 days. Here in Maine, 18 inches comes down, the plows
and salt trucks are out in force, and before then the end of the day it's back to business
as usual ! About 1/4 of the people here, including my brother-in-law, has a plow
blade on the front of his/her truck. Here, 6 inches of snow is laughed at ! Glad to
hear you got the card !

Back in the 70s when I was stationed in Portland, Maine, seemed like every soul with a pickup truck had a snow plow on the front of it. After a big snow there were dozens of them roaming the streets, jumpstarting dead vehicles, pulling vehicles out of snow banks or pushing snow. Often they jump started and towed without any payment, just to help out a fellow citizen. I doubt it’s like that now.

I can’t speak for Maine, but at least here in Utah there is still a culture of assisting those unfortunate enough to get stuck in the snow. Last winter I happened upon a woman who skidded off the road and into a median in my neighborhood, had her car stuck over the curb. I didn’t own tow straps but I told her I’d go buy some and be right back. When I returned, another neighbor with a pickup was already towing her car out. So I didn’t need the tow straps after all, but perhaps I’ll have a chance to use them this winter.

We'll have to wait until the strike is over to find out.

I sent off my international packages yesterday -- which is a bit late. They may not arrive on time. My apologies in advance. Drop-ship items should arrive in a day or two however.
I hope they give as much enjoyment to the recipient as they were to send.

Looking forward to the card from Madhatter. Always a laugh.

Package

I hope it was packaged extremely and fairly shock resistant. Remember, it's football
season and sometimes I think they handle packages like a football. One year a
package was sent to me and the 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask was in pieces.

Hi! This is my first post. I have received the Christmas card Sunday, but I forgot to reply. Thanks, Mad Hatter!

I'm trying to get my package shipped this week to my secret recipient. I hope it finds him well, and in the correct number of pieces.

Though I don't yet have a lab of my own, I hope to get a place to do chemistry in the near(ish) future. So, you'll probably see me again with many questions and updates!

Support

You're in the right place for support ! I see that your user name has "pyre" as part
of your handle. Are you the energetics type like me ? Just curious.

Thanks for the card, MadHatter! I thought it was quite appropriate. Here in Texas, we get a dusting of snow and they close the whole world down. In Maine, nothing slows them down. Good on them!

No, I'm not. I'm more into salt chemistry and some organics, and I'm working on practical applications for various compounds. As for energetics, I'm very fascinated, but would never trust myself to do much more than reloading ammunition. I'll probably open a new thread to introduce myself more officially.

Also, my package is nearly ready to go, so I'll try to ship it tomorrow.

I just got a ScienceMadness.org coffee cup in the mail. It is great, as I busted my last geeky mug at work a while back, and had to resort to a boring one. So thanks to whomever sent it. I am working on shipping some packages right now for various people, hopefully I can get them all there on time.
