Actually, it's me you've managed to confuse! "distilled water that I neutralized with some NaHCO<sub>3</sub>": distilled water is pH
neutral, adding bicarbonate to it makes it, well... a solution of bicarbonate in water. And that is alkaline!

Actually, distilled water is not pH neutral, due to dissolved carbon dioxide.
Anyway, I think he meant "the solution (mixed with distilled water) that I neutralized." He probably didn't neutralize the water.
