I do not like CrO3 procedure, because it must be performed at the edge of runaway, to obtain any amount of 3-NP acid. At lower temperatures it gives nothing :(
I have always wanted to try catalytic air oxidation of 1-nitronaphtalene in boiling acetic cacid, with Co(III) acetate (and Br as promotor). Realively simple, but somehow I had not time for this....
There is an old article from Berichte or Annalen, about KMnO4 oxidation of 1-nitrotetraline, but as far I remember, exact conditions are not given and final yield is low (>20 %)
