Experiment angular momentum of light form 1936
I found an interesting paper that may be of interest to others too.
Below is a snip of the apparatus used to measure the angular momentum of light directly. Its fascinating what can be achieved even back in 1936.
I wonder how the torque compares to the torque on a compass needle from the earth's magnetic field.
