Abuse of free image hosting service

Browsing through the list of referrals, I stumbled across some links that clued me into abuse of the free image hosting service offered here for members.

http://www.hipforums.com/thread-27-121849.html
http://www.hipforums.com/thread-27-127449.html

Those two were the most obvious. I then browsed through the scipics directory, and found more garbage which doesn't belong. A warning to the abusers: your shit won't be tolerated, and if it continues, remember that I can find out the IP address of the abusers, and have the authority to place IP bans.

The service will not be discontinued, as it seems to have been a strongly positive contribution to this community. Thank you, those who've used it as it was meant to be.

I weep at the sight of flaming acetic anhydride.

grrr

Part of the problem seems to occur because my guardian script (which shouldn't have allowed PDF files, for example) is terminated every time the server is restarted. The machine sciencemadness is hosted on has only had 20 days of uptime right now, not too great for a linux machine. There's no way to automatically restart the script when the machine itself restarts. If this gets to be a serious problem I will provide some stronger countermeasures, but I hope it doesn't get to be a serious problem.

I like the edited image you provided in that second thread, BTW.

I knew that some member of the-hive used sciencemadness to link some of their img but i think it's because they are sometime members of the two...

You can link to it on other forums, under the condition that it is being used on this board. If it's not being linked to on this board, forget it.

A more entertaining deterrent would be to replace the offending images with hardcore pornography or nazi insignia. That would definitely get the message across.

Or even better: some hardcore Nazi porn.

(Notice the above was to be taken in a joking manner, a 'superb binding' of the swastika idea and the hardcore pornography. Thank you.)

It would make the poster look stupid, thus reinforcing the message that the image FTP is not to be abused.

BTW, does anyone have any Nazi porn? It's a genre that until now I had never even considered.

I think not only will such pornography make them look bad, it will do likewise to sciencemedness. Raistlin's got a point.

Polverone, I don't know what operating system you are using on the server but if it is Linux couldn't you try a cron job to start the script?

I'll try setting it up as a cron job. Good idea.

However, the main abuse - use of the image hosting service for images that have nothing to do with this forum or chemistry - continues.

Reviewing the logs today, I see that we receive an unusually high number of referrals from fatihfreedom.org. What does a site critical of Islam have to do with chemistry? Precious little. This might explain a number of images I've found lurking in the scipics folder, though.

I'm quite sure you can use .htaccess or configure Apache to restrict referrals to certain websites. If not maybe you could use a dynamic script such as Perl or PHP to manage images.

You could try the .htaccess code from the Apache 1.3 URL Rewriting Guide. Scroll down to "Blocked Inline-Images" for the code and description. It should work though I haven't tested it as I am not using Linux at the moment (I dual-boot Windows and Red Hat Linux 9).

Yes I linked some pics to the HIVE from here (chemistry only), and I think some are not on this board. I thought I had asked Polverone on this - if not I apologize.
I have also uploaded some universal usable pics of reaction apparati for everyone to use of course - just nobody wants to use them it seems....

As its obvious to the administration if a pic relates to me I would appreciate to be told if what I do resembles a problem - I guess up to now this wasnt so.

Hey If_X_was_Y!
nice pic of yours, like it! ;)

Found some more leeching of the scipics service. http://forums.lycaeum.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_top...

The image that replaces the leeched images is rather classy, a good choice.

I agree whole heartedly. Maybe we should organize a day for everyone to go off and try and find one case of FTP space abuse. In the spirit of a snake killing day except this time actually doing something good. Fun for all!

A cron job would do it or a script to execute placed in the .bashrc file in a regular users home dir. The user would have to be one that logged in every time the server was started.

Using Slackware 9.1 with the new 2.6.2 kernel:D
