benzotrichloride
hey all !
I am into manufacturing of benzotrichloride. Can anyone please help me in knowing which catalyst would be the best for use in the process of making
benzotrichloride by chlorination of toluene. With the current process that i use I am able to get benzotrichloride in 24 -30 hrs of chlorination. Pls
suggest some catalyst that could speed up the process.

Use blue light such as actinic 03 (gives better depth penetration vs. UV thus has more activity). Also a metal halide bulb in the 12,000K -20,000K
range would probably be quite effective as well due to the increase light output.
A few grams of red phoshorus per liter in the mix is said to speed things up a bit.
One might also consider adding in some alkali chlorate as an in situ HCl recycler.
I think in the end though the biggest problem is the fact that your trying to keep a gas in a boiling liquid. Longer you can keep it in there the
faster your reaction will go.

Mercury vapour lamps (lighting varity) work well, and are fairly low cost.
I don't think I'd want to drop chlorates into a refluxing organic liquid.
