What would you do with an obscene amount of sodium nitrite?
Somebody is offering me food grade sodium nitrite for free, which I only am considering because I understand it's hard to come by. The catch is they
will only give it to me if I take the entire 300 lbs of the stuff!
I'm pretty sure that I'm going to decline the offer, despite the little hoarder in me screaming "But it's free!!!"

That's a lot, but if you have so much, then you could share it with others, and you could do large scale experiments with making nitric acid. If you
have so much, then it becomes feasible to try making nitric acid from NO/NO2, air and water, where the NO/NO2 is made by adding acid (e.g. NaHSO4,
so-called pH-minus for swimming pools). If you have so much, then efficiency is not that important, losing some of the NO/NO2 into the air is not a
problem in that case.
Of course, you need a good and safe and dry place to store the material.
You also need to be careful when producing large amounts of NO/NO2 that you do not breathe the gas.
I would accept the offer, if I lived in a place with a garden and a barn for storing it in a few plastic tubs, which can be sealed.
If you live in an appartment/flat, then I would decline the offer.

Yes, one reason to post here is to see if anyone else might have a use. I would be happy to share.
Thanks for the suggestion re nitric acid. That is a good point. I do have a fume hood for handling toxic fumes so that would be possible.

Sharing can be done with people, living in the same country or region (e.g. EU, USA, Australia, UK). So, just let people know where you live, then I
give you a good chance that there are people in that area/country, who are interested in getting a few lb's.

You could do an unholy amount of diazotizations or make more beef jerky than you could ever eat!

If you have space, definitely get it. It’s almost impossible to get for the amateur right now, you could easily resell it for $10 a pound.

OK I think I'm convinced. I will be picking it up tomorrow. Once I have it I will check if anyone in the US wants some (for a modest fee and shipping
cost).

I'd be willing to take a chunk of it, as it is hard to find lately. Maybe you can trade it for other things you can use. Once you get it, let us
know and we can sort out a way to make it work for you. If you need activated carbon, silica gel, or other salts, I am happy to trade or just buy
some from you.

After seeing a few videos, the explanation of the nitrate turning to nitrite in the mystery yellow powder demonstration/explanation, has there been a
video of nitrite being substituted for nitrate to see how that goes?

I tried nitrite, and it was quite energetic. I’ve never gotten yellow powder to work, probably because I don’t have any potassium carbonate, but
the version I made with sodium nitrite popped pretty loud. I’ve seen a video of urea/sodium nitrite detonating when heated, so it makes sense.

Aaaargh! I got scooped. Someone was able to pick up the nitrite before I could make it there.
This is funny. This morning I was thinking why would I want 300 lbs of sodium nitrite and now I'm mourning the loss of 300 lbs of sodium nitrite I
could have had.

That's what I was thinking - when life gives you sodium nitrite, make bacon!
Or in this case, start a factory.
Would definitely be thinking along these lines given it's food grade - but again, 300 lb is a ludicrous amount.
On reading further down the thread, sorry to hear about your loss!
