I love the size. Mines as big as a shoe box and has 6 heavy d cells in side. Use it for cadweld charges and the occasional trench blast. Got a little
use a few days ago with the new years.

I guess the guts of these contain some very low resistance, high energy caps and a charging circuit.
And some bleed resistors to remove the energy if left alone for a while, disarming the device.
Are there any DIY variants of this sort of device one can build?
I have some electronic skills but would prefer to start with a proven design compared to develop something from scratch.

in my opinion ; You can use the flash charging circuit of disposable cameras as a basic idea.
In Google, the schematics of those circuits are available.
As someone who has worked with standard military examples of these devices; The basic idea of all of them is like the charging circuit of disposable
cameras.
Good luck

That is probably a good idea to try.
Those flash caps in one-time cameras are pretty powerful, i have played around with them long ago.
If not enough power several caps can be used.
I guess it depends on how long cable one wants to use to the e-match or similar.
Some remote wireless triggering signal would be nice, then just a short cable from the explosive to the DIY device would be needed.
Also, in the the one-time cameras there is a trigger coil that can be used to trigger the discharge of the caps.
The main thing must be to make it absolutely safe, so it doesnt accidently trigger somehow.
Maybe a mecanical pin that needs to be removed by a thin rope, but it kind of ruins the wireless triggering.
A long cable is probably better and safer.

I have not had much luck with photoflash capacitors, but a microwave oven capacitor charged to 4kv will detonate ETN every time.
