Vertical space compactness in threads
It's been awhile... Something that struck me coming back to SM:
Many threads are dozens of pages long. Reading them is made no less difficult for the fact that most of the vertical room inside a post is the top bar
("posted on XXXXXX" etc), the bottom bar ("profile", "find" etc), and spacers added to both sides of text! The text is altogether maybe 1/4
of the total post height, on average. I propose that there should be a reading mode, where most of the height is actual text. Both top and bottom bar
can be merged into one, that occupies as much room as a single line of text, and the spacers gone. It would make reading threads like that white, white phosphorus thread much, much easier.

See on the left top just above the page numbering "printable version" and click on that and you will get a different page formatting that is more text
intensive.

In Printable View, the text is more prominent, yet the page is completely colourless, with text squished against left side of screen. So I was
thinking about some alternative to that.

If you download the page ( Save Page As ...) you can Edit it to your heart's content, even read it offline.
Even MS Word has an HTML editing mode.
IMHO the only thing that makes SM harder to read is the lack of use of pertinent white space by users (aka paragraphing) exemplified by the OP.

Yes this is possible, and quite cumbersome.
also,
my post was 4 1/2 lines, and you want it further split into smaller pieces?? wtf

Unfortunately it is not currently possible to give a Natural response to your statement/question.
Appologies if this is not the response required, expected or desired.

Ideally, if the compact thread view when previewing posts, could be used normally (and not upside down).
