PABA methyl ester

PABA, also known as para-aminobenzoic acid can be esterfied with ethanol to give benzocaine.

Im wondering if there is any info on the methyl ester. (Mainly if it is safe) Ive searched on google and nothing promising came up.

All I have is denatured alcohol with 5% methanol.

Hello TheBackyardScientist,

this is an article which mention LD50 for many PABA alkyl ester including the methyl ester. the methyl one is slightly less toxic (LD50= 237 mg/kg) than the ethyl analogue (LD50= 216mg/kg).

Dany.

Hey thanks Dany! I knew there would be some literature on it, because I saw it for sale on Chinese websites listed as a "pharmaceutical".

I already distilled some ethanol, and made the ethyl ester. I still have 45 grams of PABA left so I will try making other esters.
