improved gortex product
gortex is based on a microporous teflon membrane which is sandwiched between two layers of fabric. one disadvantage is that teflon is not extensible
so goretex can not stretch, and can actually be damaged by too much stretching force.
i was thinking it might be preferable to use some sort of elastomer such as viton or maybe even kalrez as the microporous membrane. then the
material could be extensible and probably there would be better adhesion to the sandwhich fabrics.

I appologize for my curiosity - but for what is gortex used? The main uses of teflon, afaik, are resulting from its chemical inertness. But it is
inbetween 2 fabric layers, that are not inert. Where is the logic here? Besides as you say it can be damaged, and can't be stretched. So why not to
put 3rd fabric layer inbetween.. ?
sorry, i am not a specialist in polymers

Waterproof clothing. Liquid water (from the rainstorm you are standing in) doesn't get through the tiny pores due to surface tension, while water
vapor (from sweating inside your jacket) can pass through the holes just fine. Thus you stay dry.
I love the stuff if I am outside in inclement weather. It stops wind well also.

nice wear.. so it is possible to wear it just like that, without rain also? i think i should purchase one for myself. Concerning elastomers, AFAIK
such clothing was first done with natural rubber, but the rubber tended to sink down during time, so this "costume" eventually became a piece of
rubber in the end of trousers

I'm not sure what you mean by that. It does make nice jackets that are useful against many kinds of weather - rain, sleet/snow, wind, and it is warm
(some) since it keeps the wind off and the air inside.

Yes, i mean wether it is a versitile wear for all kind of weather, or it is only a raincoat which one would be shy to wear if there is no rain. Now i
understood, thanks. Maybe it is a dry-suit for diving at the same time ?

Dry-suit is a bit much but yes it is very useful in many kinds of weather. Light
weight and compact also.

I have been hiking with gortex (boots and jacket) many times. It is a godsend for keeping dry in the winter time.

If you used a more elastic membrane for the microporous material, might not the holes also stretch and change their blocking ability?
I suspect part of the reason to use Teflon would be for its nonwetting nature, and its related nonstickyness which may help keep the pores open.
Certainly there were other plastics that could have been chosen at the time, there must have been some reason for the selection of the more expensive
Teflon.

ergonomically you would only need 50% elasticity for a turtleneck to go over your head and 75% elasticity for your knees when they bend. this would
not stretch the micropores sufficiently to allow the surface tensdion of water to pass through the membrane.
