Avators

I am wondering, since other sites have avators shoulden't we have out own too? I think an avator is a great addition to put profile.

I considered it, but I've seen too many ugly avatars on other sites. I can't give everyone good taste, so I do the second best thing: leave avatars off.

maybe putting a list of avatar that we can take without allowing us to upload them, and adding a sticky thread taht would allow us to post new avatar to be approved...

show off your proposed avatars

You should already know how to upload pics to the server. I don't want people to have identical avatars. No duplicates allowed, sorry. No animated avatars either. Post your avatars for approval here. I unfortunately have no way of turning avatars on/off on a per-user basis, so I'm going to have to see enough avatars here to convince me that the quality and interest are high enough to justify enabling an often-abused feature of message boards.

Not that I think that avatars are really necessary, but they can be a nice addition to a forum because they are somewhat of a personal mark of each member. They can get annoying if their dimensions or filesize are too large, but I think you already got that point :).

I assume it's the standard 150x150 pixels?

I designed it some time ago when I watched alot of the darkangel series.

Maybe I'll make a new one shortly ...

Indeed, octanitrocubane, designed with the new chem3d 8.0. You can really see what difference OpenGL hardware acceleration makes..:D

Seems to be a bit on the wide side.
Use photoshop or other imagery program to resize the largest dimension to 150 pixels and make sure the aspect ratio is being maintained.

What's the policy on avatars that appear to be ordinary GIFs, but are in fact animations that briefly flash up a hardcore pornographic image every few minutes?

Banned?
Tolerated?
Mandatory?

I'm being anal-retentive with this, but the FAQ implies that avatars are activated

The subject of Avatars was also brought up here:
http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=2025
Which references this thread. We don't have them at the moment and personally I don't really like the look of a site cluttered with avatars and broken image files. I love sciencemadness the way it is, that's why I tried to shoot down the idea like a raise for school teachers.

Nonetheless, it's always up for discussion is it not?

(Not to stereotype too heavily, but the spelling of the thread title seems to exemplify the quality that avatars bring to a forum, at least in my biased point of view.)

As long as the avatar contains something science related then I think its a great idea.

Bromic has a point about quality control. When avatars are abused it gives a forum that pre-school look. What if avatars were vetted in some way, maybe even as a form of reward for good post quality?
IMO anything taller or wider than 70 pixels or thereabouts is too big.
