Adamantium is a metallic element in the marvel comic world of the X-men. Wolverine is said to have his skeleton coated with this virtualy indestructible metal.

Look on Wikipedia for a better description.

Uh, yes, that would definitely place it in the Periodic Chart in the same family as kryptonite.

However, I always thought it was an alloy, probably of unobtainium and red mercury.

Unobtainium is not an unreal chemical, but it is a variable one. It is any compound that you need but can't get your hands on (buy or make.) Unfortunately, unobtainium is a rather ubiquitous material.

Unobtainium is closely akin to the annoying variable compound murphyum, which is any synthetic target that always goes wrong.

And in recent times there are increasing numbers of frustrating compounds of the forbidinum class, see the DHS chemicals of interest list for a survey of these.

You are in deep trouble if your next synthesis requires a combination of unobtainium and forbidinum, and if you manage to overcome those hurdles only to have your product turn out to be murphyum.

Diphoronepentaperoxide isn't real.
