MSWord wants access to the web when I paste
I copied a chem ref. by highlighting (CtrlA) copy and pasting to MSWord. Suddenly my firewall alerts me that word wants access to the web.. naturally
I blocked all access for the time being. What is this about?

How about you try this again, and see if it is a reproducible phenomenon?
I could be just an automatic upgrade/version checker etc.

Of course it will do this again. You're copying embedded code, formatting information or data like a URL or image location and it needs this data to
fully reproduce the contents of that page; not merely the conspicuously offered text shown to you by your browser alone.
That's standard. Let it do its thing. Or paste into notepad for text only.

Or just use a wordpad *.rtf file for text and some minor object paste options.

You can use the Edit|Paste special function in Word and choose paste as "Text only" option if it bothers you (it does bother me, as it takes quite
some time for Word to retrieve the HTML information).
