Mechanics brain teaser: maximum velocity?
A mass m is resting on a horizontal surface and connected to a rigid wall by means of a perfect Hookean spring. The friction coefficient
between mass and surface is μ (see #).
At t=0 the mass is moved horizontally, so the spring is compressed to the following displacement:
$$\frac{2\mu mg}{k}$$
It is then released.
Questions:
1. What is the maximum velocity the mass achieves? (1 point)
2. At what spring displacement does the mass achieve maximum velocity? (1 point)
3. What happens after the mass comes to a standstill? (1 point)
