Nitric acid burns

Well I have had them here and there, but the other day ( 2 days ago) I got an orange one. I would like to know how, just so you know it was warm and very very concentrated. I am all ears.

What exactly are you asking? You want to know how you got the acid burn? I'd assume you spilt some acid on yourself? :D

But then again, nitric acid burns aren't a laughing matter, you should be more careful, just imagine what would have happened if that acid got splashed into your eye :(

I know a guy who worked with refining precious metals for a living... one day he forgot his goggles I guess and managed to get a drop of HNO3 on his eye. Said the top layer of skin peeled off, doctor explained the body is better at neutralizing acid than base and he should be very thankful it wasn't a larger drop, or a drop of lye solution, else the whole eye...

Uh anyway, I think the OP is asking about the coloration? He was quite vague. Nootloss?

Strong or conc. HNO3 will produce yellow to orange burns on the skin. They last for about a week, maybe longer if the area is large.

Wear neoprene gloves when handling the acid. There always seems to be a drop or two on the outside of the HNO3 container that finds your skin when you pick it up. Sometimes you can acquire a nasty burn before you start to feel the pain.

First off I wear goggles.

Second) I did not spill it on my self. I spilt it all over, and then seceded in not neutralizing it all with ammonia. Then in the movement of stabilizing my self my 4 fingers ended up in it, with out me noticing it (of course) about 10ish seconds past by, then I looked down to see that my hand was smoking, mind you no pain.

Third) the burns don’t last for a week. If the skin falls off first :)

Fourth) sorry about you friend that’s sucks

Fifth) “Wear neoprene gloves” no way, see when people ask, “wow what’s on your hand” and I get to say “highlighter” knowing what it really is, well it makes me laugh.

Sixth) I really really cool tip I learned it that when working with nitric acid, hand a pig pool of week ammonia laying around, if you can't tell why just ask

For some reason, I find the usage of that excuse funny, but still not worth getting nitric acid burns

Once I had a mistake with hot 99% nitric acid.

It burned the skin only on the surface, but it left scars.
The quantity of the acid was 1-2 drops. (it was an accident with EtOH-traces in a measuring flask - acid was splattering around and i was really really lucky not to get acid in the eye while i had forgotten to take on my protective goggles in this moment)

I think in comparison, 40% hot NaOH would be much much nastier as it penetrates the skin very fast and very deep as it turns the body fat into soap and dissolves/denat. the proteins.

An old but quite funny thread on nitric acid and the skin: http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=166

The Bird had much more time on his hands back then. :D
