oil diffusion pumps
I need to find some write-ups on installing oil diffusion pumps. They all seem to have these big flanges on them; why? what to do with them?

They are very high flow, but need a backing pump like a rotary pump to get them down to the very low pressures where they work. They are primarily
used in physics apps like vacuum tubes, optical coating, cyclotrons and other accelerators, etc. The large flanges are because they hook up to a very
low-resistance system, commonly directly to the vacuum chamber. www.belljar.net has a lot of good info, and John Strong's "Procedures in Experimental Physics" (1938), although dated gives applications and small
vacuum system designs.
