cotton and spider web production in a reaction

i recently was working in a synthesis to make Phthalimide with phthalic anhydride and ammonium carbonate......the reaction calls for heating to 300C keeping it cool with air flowing ......i attempted the reaction in a beaker with a fan and when i returned to the lab it appeared as if though it snowed .....cotton fluff all over.....what a clean up mess, however once i used a RBF and a refrigerating column making sure the colummn didn't get plugged up the reaction was cooled after a couple of hours at 300C in a open vessel and a cake of white phthalimide was the result......solo
