American Chemical Society

Has anyone on this board received a letter stating that you have been
nominated to join the Amercian Chemical Society. I got such a letter 2
days ago and don't know what to make of it. I don't even know how they
would get my name considering that I don't have a degree in chemistry.
Any comments, explanations, or even speculation is appreciated.

If it kindly goes like this:

"We kindly invite you to join the DEA to help us arrest you" But where it says DEA it's been tippexed out to read "Amercian Chemical Society"

..Then it's a sting!!

All that glitters isn't gold.

Youy should contact the American Chemical Society (ACS) as soon as possible, to find out whether the communication was from them and is genuine. Their website is: http://www.acs.org/ , which should have appropriate email contact addresses.

I am fairly sure that the ACS gets lists of fresh Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, and Chemical Engineering graduates from American universities each year, and sends them invitations to join. However, for the ACS to invite non-graduates to join would be absolutely exceptional, and would surely only happen if a non-graduate had made a substantial published contribution to Chemistry.

Yeah, I got one in the mail. I believe it has to do with signing up for one of the chemical databases - since I have also been getting E-mails with similar topics since then.

There is no requirement to join the ACS, they want to make money like any corporation and if they have most any indication you might be interested in the organization they'll try and hook you.

It is a good thing though, it lends a bit of legitimacy to your actions, you get a neat magazine every month, and if you're a student you can join fairly cheaply.
