im taking a wild guess.. but it was my understanding that many greases are some kind of mixture of a soap and an oil..
this sounds like the kind of thing that someone a hundred years ago might have done (im not knocking it people where less pussified then 
perhaps check out some old patents or Google books possibly archive.org ive learnt alot from these old texts
